Hijacker killed in police chase
Three men were arrested and one killed in a police chase on the Southern Freeway.
POLICE arrested three men in connection with a hijacking outside King Edward Hospital today, 7 January.
A man driving a Chevy Spark was approached by hijackers who demanded the driver get out of the vehicle. The men made off in the car and abandoned it outside China Mall in Sydney Road, Umbilo.
At around 9am the police received a complaint of an abandoned car in Sydney Road and were told by the informant that the men had left the hijacked vehicle and made off in a get-away car. A registration number was given to the police which was circulated and picked up on the Southern Freeway southbound.
The Umbilo SAPS crime prevention B group went in pursuit of the vehicle and gave chase. The hijackers shot at the police and the officers retaliated, killing one of the men.
The other three men were arrested and their car was recovered. The hijacked vehicle is currently at the Umbilo Police Station where it is being checked for fingerprints.
The case is under further investigation.
