Heather recognised for community work
Bulwer Community Safety Forum chairperson, Heather Rorick, was given an award by the mayor.
HEATHER Rorick’s dedication to community work has earned her a mayoral recognition.
Heather, the chairperson of the Bulwer Community Safety Forum, was nominated in the crime prevention category for a Mayor’s Award for Excellence and was awarded as a finalist at a glittering gala dinner at the ICC.
“I was contacted by Insp Mazwi Mlangeni last year who told me I had been nominated for the award. He said Nicole Graham, our ward councillor, had nominated me. He had to do a background check into my life, and spoke to the community as well. I was told I might not make it to the finals, but I was invited to an awards evening, which was a lavish affair!” said Heather.
She said in each category an overall winner was picked, and she was overjoyed to be one of the finalists.
“Everyone in the finals got an award. On the evening we were told that just to make it to the dinner was an honour. I was very shocked and very grateful. I’m actually still in shock! I’m a plain person and don’t like the limelight. It’s nice to be recognised but this award is not just for me, it’s for the community,” she said.
Heather said she hoped the award would enable her to do more and get involved in more projects in the area.
She said the goals she had for the Bulwer Community Safety Forum this year were to get more involved in family-orientated projects in the community and to grow the forum in any way she can.
“I hope to work a lot more with people in the community and the neighbourhood, and wish everyone a better year,” she said.
