MEC calls for probe into police involved in illegal activities

KZN MEC has instructed police management to investigate allegations of police involvement in illegal actvities.

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has called on police management in the KwaZulu-Natal to immediately conduct a probe into allegations that policemen were involved in illegal activities, including vehicle theft and stolen goods.

According to a release from the MEC’s office, it is alleged that, on Friday 16 January 2015, a vehicle tracking company traced and located the vehicle in Verulam. After pulling over the vehicle and confronting the driver, he allegedly pointed his gun at the tracking company employees, who shot him in the shoulder.

After he was arrested, it was discovered the suspect is a constable from the Inanda Tactical Response Team.
He will be charged with attempted murder, pointing a firearm and possession of a stolen property.

In another incident, it is alleged that a policeman was found in Umlazi with stolen goods including computers and chairs that belonged to a local school.
A case of theft has been opened in connection with this matter.

On Monday, 19 January, Mchunu called on the provincial police management to get to the bottom of these matters so that appropriate action could be taken if there was substance in the allegations.

“We have said time and again that the majority of our police are honest and diligent public servants.
“But if there is a suggestion that any of our members are involved in criminality, the long arm of the law will take its course without fear or favour. We will be keenly keeping an eye on these matters to ensure that justice is not only done but it must also be seen to be done,” said Mchunu.
