Police search for cellphone thief

Glenwood residents are urged to be on the lookout for a well-known car guard who is wanted for theft.

TWO Glenwood residents have urge the community to be on the lookout for a man who is a known car guard in Helen Joseph Road.

According to Marcel Whatley and Anton De Beer, the guard, known as Richard, allegedly stole two cellphones from their home on Monday. Police are searching for him.

Anton said a woman who used to work for them had been to see them on Monday morning. Her sister, who was with her had sat waiting for her on the wall outside the flat.

“I lit a cigarette and walked outside and saw this man peeping around the wall. I asked him what he was doing inside our property, as it is private property. He must've followed someone inside. I turned and walked back, and the woman outside told me he had just stolen our cellphones from just inside our front door!”

“We ran after him and then drove around looking for him, but he was gone. Another security guard in Helen Joseph Road said Richard and another man had planned this, and that he had told them he was going to sell them at Dalton Hostel. He said Richard would be back in the area by Friday, as his money would have run out,” said Marcel.

He said he had been told that Richard fitted the description of a man who had robbed a 14-year-old school child in Bulwer Park at the weekend.

The men reported the theft at Umbilo SAPS.

“Even when we reported it to the police, they knew who we were talking about. Theysaid they will find him,” said Marcel.

“I am so worried about crime. Illegal car guards should really be removed. They are just opportunistic. This man is on whoonga, and he is supporting his drug habit, but I don't think there is any solution to this problem, it is out of hand. We moved here from Johannesburg, but I only heard about this drug when we got to Durban. The crime here is much worse,” said Anton.

He appealed to the public not to buy stolen goods, as this was fueling theft.

“I appeal to the public to report to the police, or get hold of Heather Rorick from Bulwer Community Safety Forum or myself on Facebook, should you see this man, as he is known to everyone in the area,” said Marcel.
