Forum needs patrollers

Bulwer Community Safety Forum encourages residents to join in patrols.

THE Bulwer Community Safety Forum (BCSF) is encouraging residents to join in on their patrols.

According to Heather Rorick, BCSF chairperson, patrollers don't need to be young and fit to go on patrol.

“We need more volunteers and everyone is welcome. You don't have to be fit – we are the eyes and ears on the streets and work with the police and local security companies. We are doing this as residents and home owners, to try keep a presence on the streets and bring down crime in the community,” she said.

Heather said the forum was also looking for sponsors for patrols, as money for petrol was coming out of the patrollers' own pockets.

“With rising costs, funding is becoming a burden and we are having to decrease patrols. We urge any corporates who can help sponsor petrol and radio airtime to come forward,” said Heather.

She said the group had seven radios, and airtime for each cost R100 a month.

“For a non-profit organisation we are already starting off spending R700 a month, but these radios are the only thing that protect us on the streets. We are not armed, and they are a link between each of us. We are also encouraging anyone who will donate us radios to contact us,” she said.

The forum will be doing an Easter drive again this year and appealed for any donations of Easter eggs and toiletries which will be handed out to children at King Edward Hospital.
