Be vigilant, says Blue

Blue Security says it is important to be vigilant and not to become complacent about crime.

AN Umbilo resident was robbed of her handbag while standing outside the gate of her home on Saturday.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the woman was standing outside the property in Leighton Crescent at around 9.30pm when a gang driving a silver VW Polo stopped and held her up.

“We urge residents not to wait outside their properties for lifts and to always check their surroundings before stopping and opening their gates when arriving home. Criminals are cruising the neighbourhood both on foot and in vehicles looking for opportunities to rob and steal so it is important to be vigilant and not to become complacent about crime,” said Jackson.

He said several cases of housebreaking and theft had been reported to the company in Umbilo, Glenwood and on the Berea over the past week.

“Housebreakers targeted three properties in Umbilo, fleeing with cellphones, a laptop, a watch, cash and an Xbox 360. In Glenwood, there were several cases of theft including copper pipe theft at two properties and the theft of a security guard’s patrol bicycle,” he said.

Jackson added that the storeroom at a business premises in Silverton Road had been broken into and plastic chairs and tables had been stolen.
