Berea police were hard at work bringing crime levels to a minimum this week.

Braai theft lands thief in hot water

A man was arrested in Morningside after being caught red handed with a braai stand in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea police, a Morningside man was awoken about 5am by a noise on his balcony. “When he looked out, he saw a man, approximately 25 years old, carrying a black bucket and his braai stand,” explained Naidoo.

The shocked resident screamed at the man, who ran out his property. The resident contacted the police who responded quickly and arrested the suspect and recovered the stolen items,” said Naidoo.

The suspect was detained at Berea SAPS for theft.

Co-worker stops attempted car theft

IT was luck Friday 13th for a car owner after an alert co-worker informed him of suspicious men attempting to steal his car, which was parked in Ritson Road.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, spokesman for Berea police, at about 10am, the man was informed by his co-worker that two men were about to damage his car.

“The man phoned the police who responded immediately. He creamed at the suspects, before giving chase. The suspects were arrested by the police, nothing was stolen but the car window was damaged and the suspects were detained at Berea police for attempted theft of motor vehicle,” concluded Naidoo.

CPF Meeting

Berea CPF will host an open meeting on Thursday, 26 March at the DHS school on St Thomas Road at 5.30pm and invite the public to attend and get involved in their community police forum.

Be Crime Aware

Berea police want the public to be aware of fraudsters posing as legitimate business people and stealing their property.

“People must verify who they dealing with before handing over their property for example jewellery for sizing and cleaning,” said Berea police spokesman, Lieutenant PN Naidoo.

Naidoo said people continued to leave valuables such as expensive cellphones, wallets and iPads visible in vehicles which were being stolen by opportunistic criminals. “Please protect your property and get those visiting the area to do the same,” he advised.
