On Sunday, August 23, while Durban Metro Police officers were conducting patrols along the Durban beachfront, they were alerted to a discovery of a fetus, partially covered in sand.

Spokesperson for the Durban Metro Police, Colonel Boysie Zungu said, “At about 09:20 on Sunday, Durban Metro Police Service members were conducting patrols along the LMP near Addington Hospital.
Members were approached by security personnel, who reported that a newborn baby had been found lying on the beach sand opposite Addington Oncology.

“Members attended the scene and found a newborn male baby lying partially covered by sand. It appeared that the baby may have been buried in the sand and was later exposed by the wind.
A paramedic from Addington Hospital attended the scene and confirmed that the baby was deceased.”

Captain Carmen Rhynes, spokesperson for the SAPS eThekwini District, confirmed the incident and said an inquest docket was opened and is being investigated by Point Detectives.

Durban Metro Police urges anyone with information that may assist the investigation to report it to SAPS.
