Policewoman suspended after arrest

A Durban harbour police officer is set to fight for her job, by giving reasons to lift her suspension from the force.

DURBAN SAPS police officer, Sgt Busisiwe Zungu, will have to motivate for her suspension to be lifted, following her arrest in Hong Kong in January.

Zungu arrived back in South Africa on Friday after being cleared of drug trafficking charges. She was arrested in January at the border of Hong Kong and China, when 500mg of drugs was found in a suitcase in a taxi she was travelling in with four other people. She was acquitted after DNA tests revealed the drugs did not belong to her.

According to Major Thulani Zwane, Zungu was served with a notice of suspension following the arrest.

“We will wait for her response as to why she thinks she should not be suspended. In the meantime, an internal disciplinary investigation will be conducted against her conduct which includes leaving the country without notifying her commanders,” he said.

Her arrest prompted KZN police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni to issue a directive instructing all officers to notify their managers when travelling abroad.
