Cable theft power outage

Police are investigating an inquest into the death of a man in Umbilo after an attempted cable theft incident in Congella last week.

UMBILO police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found electrocuted in the Congella area. According to Sergeant Beverly Manqele, communications officer at Umbilo police, the man, who is believed to have been around 35 years old, was discovered badly burnt in Congella on Friday morning.

It is believed the man’s death may be related to a power failure which hit Glenwood residents as a result of cable theft. Many residents posted on social media that they only had electricity restored in the afternoon.

At the time of going to press, eThekwini Municipality had not responded to questions relating to the incident or the suspected cause of the outage.
