Caitlyn cooks her way to the top
Aspiring chef, Caitlyn Versfeld, was the branch winner of Hirsch's and Defy Junior Superchef competition.
COOKING under pressure is not an easy task, especially when one has not actually planned to take part in a cooking competition.
Twelve-year-old Caitlyn Versfeld arrived as a spectator to the Hirsch’s and Defy Junior Superchef Competition at Hirsch’s Superstore, and decided, at the last minute, to test her skills and talents in the kitchen. She ended up walking away as the well-deserved winner of the branch competition.
Ten contestants, ranging from eight to 13, battled it out in the competition. They had to show off their cooking skills, using a mystery basket of products and cooking utensils, including a Snappy Chef induction plate and Defy Microwave Air Oven, to impress the judges.
The judges were Joani Mitchell from SA Masterchef Season 2, and seasoned chefs, Ramola Makan and Cheryl Woolatt. Star Meats, in Overport sponsored all the meat the young cooks used, and Cooee sponsored cold drinks for guests and contestants.
“The level of concentration and skill displayed by all contestants was amazing, and no matter the end result, everyone is a winner!” said Joani Mitchell.
Bianca Hauser, Springfield Park PRO added: “I could never cook to the quality these Superchefs showed. I am so impressed by their enthusiasm. It was a great event and we look forward to the finals.”
Caitlyn won a Defy Hand Blender and hamper and will go on to compete in the regional finals at the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show on 3 July.
