SCF announces new committee

Sector 2 SCF chair encourages more residents to get involved in the fight against crime in Morningside.

BEREA SCF Sector 2 held its AGM on 30 July, where it introduced its committee to residents in attendance.

Chairperson, Nicky Burke, said she was pleased with the turnout at the meeting, as the group was only good as the support it got, and the feedback from the community showed that crime was reducing in the area.

“We're here to work together to find a solution,” she said.

The executive committee was announced, with Nicky Burke as chair, Hilton Kidger as vice-chair, Annamarie D'unienville as secretary, Trevor James as sector commander and members Gail Cuttler, Derek Kemp and Grant Smith.

Grant Smith, former chairperson, gave a report on crime in the area.

“In the last year, the crime has been very high, especially with the influx of people visiting Florida Road who have been targets of crime. It's very important to report crime to SAPS, even if it is not a major incident. We need to know where the crime is happening and what crimes they are. Our website is updated and we have an App where people can have access to emergency numbers and report crime,” he said.

He said the community had been very active, and that patrols would be started again in the area.

W/O Deena Naidoo from Berea SAPS spoke about crime in the sector and said theft out of and of motor vehicles was on the increase, especially in Florida Road and avenues off the road.

“Remote jamming is a problem and people must be aware of this and ensure their cars are locked. Do not leave valuables in your car. Criminals are targeting Toyotas and VW Polos and people are urged to lock their vehicles properly and use gear and steering locks and tracking devices,” he said.

He said in winter housebreaking was on the rise, especially between 2am and 5am, where criminalswere targeting businesses and stealing computer equipment.
