Drug abuse arrests
ELEVEN suspects were arrested by the Umbilo Crime Prevention Unit on the weekend of 18, 19 and 20 September.
The suspects, between the ages of 16 and 47, were arrested for the possession of dagga and heroin.
They were arrested in separate incidents on Rick Turner Road, Oliver Lea Drive, Melbourne Road, Canberra Road and on Sydney Road.
A further two suspects were arrested for drinking and driving on Sydney Road and Helen Joseph Road.
It is alleged that one of the suspects tried to escape arrest by speeding away in his car and the police gave chase.
“It is alleged that the suspect caused an accident on the corner of South Coast Road and Blammer Road. He hit a Grey VW Polo and the driver of the Polo sustained head injuries,” said Lt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS.
The man was arrested and a case of drinking and driving is being investigated.
Umbilo station commander, Col Gerald Mkhize, said: “Getting rid of drugs in our community is a priority for Umbilo SAPS as drugs are one of the main causes of crime.”
