Knit knockers for CANSA
Get involved with knitting knockers for Breast Cancer Awareness this October.
THE Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is teaming up with Knitted Knockers South Africa this October, for breast cancer awareness.
According to the 2009 National Cancer Registry, breast cancer is the most common cancer among South African women, with a lifetime risk of one in 33 women in SA.
If you're wondering what Knitted Knockers are, Ruth Archer from Knitted Knockers explains: “Knitted Knockers are breast prosthetics for women who have had a mastectomy. Made from all natural materials, they are light weight, comfortable, do not require a special bra and are given, free of charge, to breast cancer survivors.”
Knitted Knockers are made by volunteer knitters all over the world and now the movement has also spread to South Africa. This is a community project and CANSA KZN wants the community to get involved. CANSA KZN offices will sell kits for you to knit at home, for R50 each, R10 of which will go to CANSA. The kit has the pattern, 100 per cent organic cotton and pure merino super wash stuffing. All knockers knitted will go back to CANSA to give to breast cancer patients (at no charge) who so desperately need them.
If you are unable to knit, you can also sponsor a kit which will be knitted by a volunteer.
“We are so excited to get involved with such a fun and unique campaign. We know of so many breast cancer patients who simply cannot afford breast prostheses, and with the help of Knitted Knockers – we can help those women feel beautiful again,” said Cara Noble, CANSA divisional services manager for Kwa-Zulu Natal.
