Youngsters apprehended for drug possession
A group of five youngsters were apprehended on Saturday afternoon by Berea SCF Sector One community members after they were found in possession of a variety of drugs.
Des Moodley, chairman of Berea SCF Sector One explained that community members were doing a foot patrol on Saturday which was the norm after the flea market closed, when they noticed two suspicious young men. “We apprehended the men at the corner of Essenwood and Musgrave, after we found needles on him and contacted Berea police who arrested them. Later we went to the round table at Berea Park which is a popular spot for drug users and dealers and found three minors. They had various drugs on them, including magic mushrooms, dagga and Rohypnol. The teenagers allegedly went to South Beach where they purchased the drugs and came to our community park to smoke them,” he said.
Captain TD Gumede, communications officer at Berea SAPS, thanked the community for their vigilance and confirmed Berea police will continue operations on an ongoing basis until “areas are drug free.” “Drugs are a problem that must be fought with police and community in partnership. I am confident that one day we are going to win this war,” he added.
