Currie Road servitude invaded overnight

Ward councillor says it is up to province to remove the squatters who have erected a shelter in Currie Road.

A servitude between the view point in Currie Road and the abandoned pathology lab at 230 Currie Road has reportedly been invaded by squatters who appear to be setting up structures.

A resident, who did not want to be named, raised the alarm this morning saying the servitude had been invade overnight. “Plastic sheeting, old sheets and chairs have found their way into the servitude. Normally the gate is locked and the area is fenced with barbed wire, but the gate has been cut open. I have sent an email to the municipality,” she said.

Councillor Jethro Lefevre told Berea Mail that he had contacted the municipal land invasion unit and had been informed that the property was owned by the provincial department of arts and culture, and the unit could do nothing.

“I was told the issue had been forwarded to the provincial department of human settlements. I am on it, but I am now between a rock and a hard place as it is basically out of my hands. I will however follow up on this,” he said.
