City Manager’s ‘vague’ answers put damper on traffic issues

Councillor Nicole Graham said the City Manager could give her no concrete answers on what is to be done about traffic calming and enforcement at intersections in Glenwood.

THE reportedly 'vague' and 'unhelpful' answers to questions around speed timing devices in Glenwood, submitted to City Manager Sbu Sithole in last week's council meeting, has left ward councillor Nicole Graham exasperated.

Graham said Sithole set about answering her questions put to council in terms of the rules of order which were submitted in October 2015, which sought to establish whether speed limit and warning signs and fixed speed-timing devices could be installed in Glenwood.

The questions also queried whether the city had any solutions for the intersections causing repeated problems in Glenwood, as everything suggested has been refused.

“The City Manager's vague and unhelpful answers showed just why the City continues to fail under his leadership. The City Manager said I should ask ETA (eThekwini Transport Authority) about speed timing devices and effectively said that it all comes down to enforcement. However, he could not explain if this would be increased and how it would be done,” she said.

Repeated attempts by Graham and residents to meet with senior ETA officials have failed, hence the question formally being put to council.

“The head of ETA, Thami Manyathi, has not responded to a single email sent to him in this regard, despite it being his department's core function,” she said.

Graham said she felt the inept approach of the City Manager to a very serious problem facing the Glenwood community was 'shocking'.

“The mechanisms available to councillors to get answers from the responsible officials are not taken seriously, while accidents continue unabated in our community,” she said.
