Commemorating childhood cancer day

THE Union of Jewish Women Durban branch participated in CHOC's Have a Heart for Children with Cancer campaign on Monday, in commemoration of International Childhood Cancer Day.
The women hung hearts in the tree at the Holocaust Centre in Durban, in honour of the day and in support of children battling cancer.
This day was started as a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to express support for children with cancer, survivors and their families.
In developed countries, childhood cancer has become largely curable with a 70 per cent survival rate, while in South Africa, the rate is close to 50 per cent. CHOC aims to ensure that more children in South Africa are cured and the survival rate increases.
“The Durban branch of the Union of Jewish Women decided to participate as the issue of childhood cancer was close to our hearts,” said Bev Levy.
