The eThekwini Municipality has urged motorists to remain vigilant and avoid the N3 Eastbound near Tollgate Bridge after high water levels forced the closure of three lanes on Tuesday afternoon (September 15).

The City said emergency services and Metro Police are on site managing traffic flow, with motorists travelling inbound towards the Durban CBD urged to use alternative routes, exercise extreme patience and allow for delays.

The warning comes after Durban experienced a sudden change in weather shortly before midday, with cool conditions giving way to dark clouds, strong winds and heavy downpours. Hail was also reported in some areas, with residents sharing videos and photographs of the weather.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had warned of inclement weather as a cold front moved towards the East Coast, prompting a Yellow Level 2 warning.

SAWS said further severe weather remains possible across eThekwini for the rest of the day, with residents warned of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, damaging winds and localised flooding.

Motorists are urged to reduce their speed and drive with extra caution, while residents are advised to stay away from waterways.
