Partnership aids drought victims

Gift of Givers and the Post Office have joined forces to deliver water.

CONCERNED citizens who want to extend a helping hand to the drought-stricken areas of South Africa need go no further than a post office.

The humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers and the SA Post Office have joined forces to bring relief to drought disaster areas.

The most prominent post offices in urban areas have been identified as drop-off points for sealed five-litre plastic containers of water where members of the public can leave as many containers as they wish. The programme runs for the month of February.

Donors can take water to Berea Post Office at Berea Centre, Durban, Durban central post office in West Street, the post office at 95 NMR Avenue, Durban, Greyville Post Office, at 68 Matthews Meyiwa Road, Greyville, Maydon Wharf Post Office at 145 Maydon Road, Musgrave Post Office in Musgrave Centre and Point Post Office at 252 Mahatma Gandhi Road, Durban.

Gift of the Givers will distribute the bottles of water as part of their programme to deliver drinking water to the areas of South Africa worst affected by the drought which, according to the South African Weather Services, is the worst to hit the country since 1982. The government has declared five of South Africa’s nine provinces drought disaster areas and there is a dire need for drinkable water particularly in rural areas.

Gift of the Givers has years of experience in delivering life-saving aid, having provided assistance and disaster response in 41 countries since its inception in 1992.

Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, said the organisation makes sure that all those in need of water get their fair share of the bottled water.

A donation may also be paid into Gift of the Givers’ Postbank account number 001 028 19456, branch code 460 005.
