Heavy storms lash Durban

A heavy storm with high winds and rain lashed Durban last night.

DURBAN was lashed by a heavy thunderstorm and rain last night with high winds that left a trail of branches, leaves and in some cases trees strewn across the city suburbs in its wake.

Motorists caught in the thunderstorm last night reported a string of accidents and rescue personnel were kept busy attending to a number of callouts.

Sadly, the storm claimed at least one life after a Westville man was crushed under a boundary wall which collapsed during the storm.

Many residents woke up this morning to find trees down and could be seen outside assessing the damage wreaked by the storm.

The Pavilion Shopping Centre in Westville was also flooded after rain poured in through the roof and flooded the cinema level. Photos of shoppers wading through ankle deep water were circulated on social media sites on Saturday.
