Park issues to be addressed
Residents living near the park in Clarence Road voiced their concerns regarding the park at a public meeting.
WARD councillor Martin Meyer met with residents who live in the vicinity of, and make use of the park at the corner of Problem Mkhize and Clarence Roads to discuss issues around the park which affected those living nearby.
Meyer said a few people stayed away because of the weather, however 30 residents attended, along with representatives of the Parks Department, Metro Police, SAPS and CPF.
“Issues discussed were vagrancy in the park, the state of the play equipment and broken fence. Residents also enquired whether bollards could be placed in the park to stop people parking there. The new Parks district manager, Garth Kloppenborg, has taken responsibility for the park and said he would address the issues as a matter of urgency. He did however say bollards could not be put in the park as they were expensive to maintain,” said Meyer.
He said issues around the park such as speeding in the roads and suspected drug use and dealing, would be investigated by Sgt James from Berea SAPS.
“I’m grateful to residents and officials for attending the meeting. We are hoping to hold a community picnic in the park soon to which residents will be invited to attend. We need to start using parks for what they are meant for and get rid of the people who aren’t using them the correct way. We need to take ownership of the park and community, and get to know those living in the area,” he said.
