THE sinkhole on Clark Road in Glenwood which had sparked safety fears among motorists and residents has been filled, with the repairs still incomplete.

The sinkhole was first spotted by residents in August, prompting them to raise the alarm with the eThekwini Municipality and Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher.

Concerned resident Patricia Ardé said the sinkhole had been left unattended for weeks and was initially not cordoned off. “A motorcyclist or bike driver would surely be seriously injured if they hit the sinkhole at speed,” said Ardé.

She also raised concerns that the hole was growing larger and could affect nearby properties and homes.

Her concerns were echoed by resident Pinky Blose, who called on the eThekwini Municipality to take action.
“Its’s very concerning that the sinkhole was left unattended for such a long time. Anything could have happened, more needs to be done to prevent these sinkholes from developing, it is becoming a regular occurrence in the area.”

Kristopher said she was aware of the sinkhole and that the matter had been escalated to the municipality’s Roads and Stormwater Department. “Engineers went out from Stormwater Department last week to assess damages and I am awaiting feedback to plans moving forward to repair.”

She said the extent of the damage could be contributing to delays in repairing the sinkhole. “It does seem like a collapsed stormwater line which means procurement process is required to assign repair work.”
