FOLLOWING heavy rains last week, ward 31 councillor, Jethro Lefevre, is appealing to the municipality to upgrade its stormwater sytem.
Lefevre visited homes in Sydenham last week, which were flooded for the second time in three weeks, as a result of heavy rains.
“I visited the affected area and am busy trying to get an urgent upgrade of the stormwater system in the Butcher and Barns Roads intersection. I’ve also been in contact with the office of Nigel Gumede who is the chairman of the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee to get assistance with temporary accommodation for the affected families,” he said.
Lefevre said a stormwater upgrade functioned well and prevented all the houses in Randles and Waterfall Roads from being flooded, which is what it was designed to do, however there seems to be a problem with the prevention measures that were put in place on the Barns Road sports field.
“There seems to be a massive water run off down the side stairs straight into Barns Road which added to the hard surface runoff and exacerbated the problem. Myself, the city manager’s office and the relevant municipal department are looking to remedy the situation in the form of a R22m upgrade to that area as well as a restructuring of the Barns sports ground as a matter of urgency,” he said.
