Sneaky conman robs pensioner

A woman is warning the community of a young conman who stole her jewellery.

AN Umbilo pensioner has issued a warning to the community to not be conned by a man who stole her jewellery.

According to the woman, a man got into her fully fenced and gated old age home, and arrived at her door at 9am to ask if she had any old South African coins or notes which could be exchanged for cash.

“I said I had quite a lot and invited him in, which I shouldn’t have done. He looked at the money, and had a large receipt book to write in. He asked for a calculator to work out the amount, then asked if I had any old broken gold, which he said he could give me money for too,” she said.

The woman went to her cupboard, and the man followed her. He asked about a box of jewellery the woman had on the top shelf, and she said that was jewellery she wore every day.

“He then asked if he could go to the toilet, then came out and said the total was R9 000 and that he would have to go to the car to get the money. He put the old South African money in the cupboard with my jewellery and said he’d see me soon. I waited and waited but he didn’t return. I later went to the cupboard and noticed the money was there, but he’d taken my jewellery box. He had obviously taken it when he’d put the money in, without me noticing. Mine and my husband’s 50-year-old wedding rings and other valuable jewellery have been taken,” she said.

The woman said she went to speak to the guards at the gate who said no one had walked in, so she feels he could’ve entered in someone’s car.

“I called the police but feel it’s a waste of time, as I don’t know this man from Adam. I just want people to be aware and to not be conned by him too,” she said.
