Successful Salt March along beachfront promenade

Hundreds joined together in the Gandhi Development Trusts Salt March spreading a message of peace and solidarity at the beachfront promenade on Sunday morning.

ANOTHER successful Gandhi Salt March was completed on Sunday, 24 April with a 5km march on the Durban beachfront from the Amphitheatre to uShaka and back.

The Gandhi Salt March Committee has congratulated all participants who joined the march. “This year we made a link with the Martin Luther King Foundation through the participation of Professor Julie Washington from Atlanta, Georgia who gave a powerful message of support. Linda Zama from the Premier’s office, Logie Naidoo from eThekwini, Consul General of India, Rajagopalan Raghunathan and his wife, Bishop Mike Voster, Hindu Swami from the Ananda Marg all prayed and gave messages of support,” said the Gandhi Development Trust's Kidar Ramgobind.

Many religious groups brought young participants and schools such as Durban High School brought a large number of youth. Large numbers also came from Inanda and the Phoenix Settlement community in support of the march.

The oldest participants were two 82-year-old men, the youngest participant was a 15 month-old baby. The march attracted nearly 900 participants.

“This year we attracted volunteers from the public and the Durban Youth Council, who did an excellent job in assisting. We thank all the participants, volunteers, service providers, Indian Consulate – Durban, eThekweni, Premier’s Office and the Salt March Committee for supporting this annual event. This year’s theme was Sowing the Seeds of Peace, Non-Violence and Ubuntu. We urge every participant to take this message forth in their various roles and spheres of influence so that together we can build a united, caring and nonviolent society,” added Ramgobind.
