MK Party axes eThekwini mayoral candidate

Just 11 days after being announced as the MK Party’s eThekwini mayoral candidate, Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi has been sacked.

Eleven days after Umkhonto WeSizwe Party (MKP) announced Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi as its eThekwini mayoral candidate, she has been sacked and replaced by Mxolisi Phakathi.

Phakathi was appointed as the party’s national chairperson in August and heads its National Disputes Resolution Committee.

The decision to sack Hlophe-Mkhwanazi was a result of an urgent investigation ordered by party leader Jacob Zuma, the party said.

“The investigation surrounds the manipulation of MK Party councillor candidates list, and saw the removal of Hlophe-Mkhwanazi and Sibonelo Maphumulo from the National Party Liaison Committee, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Presidential Task Team was also disbanded,” said MK Party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu.

“The president calls upon all members and structures to put these challenges behind
us, unite behind our candidates and rally behind our councillor and mayoral candidates towards a decisive victory in the Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026,” Phakathi concluded.
