From supersize to superhero

Mano Nayager is gaining his health, energy and vitality while helping the Edith Benson Babies Home to purchase items that will meet the needs of the children at the home.

A LOCAL 'superhero' has committed to lose weight, while at the same time raise funds for the Edith Benson Babies Home.

Mano Nayager, the president and founder of Super Heroes Charities, is also a celebrity comedian and a budding entrepreneur who hails from Effingham Heights in Durban. Mano, who is a well-known personality among the greater KZN community, committed to losing 15kg over a six-week period, doing what he does best – taking an opportunity to raise money for charity by getting the public to sponsor every kilogram that he loses.

The idea for this project started when Mano engaged the services of a life coach.

“I was bragging about the community work that I have done and she reminded me that I wasn't doing anything for myself. Options for this included going on a holiday, which wasn't feasible, so I opted for health and exercise, as I was getting fatigued often and was out of breath when I walked. That's where it all started,” he said.

His weight loss is being done under strict supervision and guidance with the help of his diet coach, Sue Rankin from Metabolic Menu, and Mano is following a Health Point 21 diet which converts his body system to turn fuel into diesel, using up stored fat. The diet consists of balanced carbs and protein and slow exercise.

Mano is very proud to say that he is only 2kg from his goal weight of 75kg, having started at 90kg.

“In the past, I was the biggest cheater when it came to dieting, but this time, I knew if I slipped up, I wouldn't just be cheating myself. I have given up fried foods and chocolate and walk every time I am on my phone. I am doing over and above my 10 000 steps a day, and am up to 18 000 steps a day. I feel brand new! I'm not battling at all. I have a personal trainer, Daniel Wessels who is grooming me to be nice and ripped! I love it when people say 'wow, we didn't recognise you!' It's all worth it,” he said.

He said he is hoping to maintain this weight loss, and will hopefully lose another 5kg over and above his target by the presentation day at Edith Benson Babies Home on 4 June.

Mano's fundraising goal is R30 000, and being a community orientated man is relying on his weight loss to be a team effort with a “win win” situation and is looking to the public to get involved whether it be in the form of sponsoring per kilogram, pledges or advertising.

“The Super Heros in my team are a group of dedicated independent business owners committed to making a difference in our local community and around South Africa. Together with them, I hope to make a difference in the lives of children at the Home,” he said.
