VIDEO: Protestors march on City Hall

Motorists are advised to avoid the CBD where protest action is underway.

A small crowd of Telkom staff joined workers from the South African Post Office in a protest march this morning. The workers met at Botha Park and are heading to City Hall to hand over a memorandum of grievances.  The protestors are marching against outsourcing and salary negotiations.

Traffic in the city is expected to be back up this afternoon due to the protest action.

In a media release the Post Office said the industrial action by one its unions had a neglible impact on the Post Office’s operations and it was business as usual across the country.

It said less than 1 per cent of the Post Office employees were involved in the protest action and less than 2 per cent of its offices were affected nationally.

“We will continue communicating with the unions and our employees about our commitment to resolve any employee issues. As the SA Post Office service and delivery standards continue to recover and efforts are made to resolve its difficult financial position, it is critical that all of us hold this balance and maintain stability, especially at this time when we are finalising our plans raising funding, said Mark Barnes of the SA Post Office.
