School spreads spirit of caring and sharing

Learners did a sketch about the importance of water and were given talks about the seriousness of the drought in South Africa.

ADDINGTON Primary once again showed their caring nature with a large donation to the international relief organisation, Gift of the Givers last week.

The learners raised funds during their friendship week celebrations earlier in the year where they had a Civvies Day, bake sales and collected funds for the relief organisation. The endeavour was a joint project with learners, parents and teachers who managed to donate a whooping 36 cases of gallons of water, amounting to nearly 800 litres of water for Gift of the Givers drought relief efforts.

In the special handover assembly, learners did a sketch about the importance of water and were given talks about the seriousness of the drought in South Africa. Principal Raj Moodley said, the school annually identifies a deserving organisation and engages learners, parents and staff. “This year because of the seriousness of the water crisis in the country, we chose Gift of the Givers because of their amazing relief work. We always try to teach our children that we need to care, share and support people in need and ensure they instilled with a sense of social responsibility at a young age,” he added.

Aslam Essa, a representative of Gift of the Givers said he was humbled by the school’s donation. “It’s a great contribution towards drought relief for the worst drought we have had in decades. The water is a real blessing that will quench the thirst of a lot of people who are facing this drought,” he said.
