Art auction for charity
Women are encouraged to support an upcoming art auction, to help raise funds for CANSA.
A LOCAL artist will be hosting an art auction at Boutique Boulangerie, Helen Joseph Road, on 25 June to raise funds for CANSA.
After stopping work recently due to health reasons, Marlene Pretorius, a CANSA volunteer, committed to raise funds for the organisation, while enjoying her hobby, painting.
“I still had a passion to raise funds for CANSA and started painting oil paintings on canvas, and selling to individuals, with 40 per cent of all my art sold going to CANSA. Since a previous article in Berea Mail, I sold five pieces of art, and I decided I needed to do more to ‘get out there’. I emailed all the local coffee shops randomly to see if any would exhibit my work, and Kirti from Boutique Boulangerie got back to me saying she was interested,” said Marlene.
Kirti Kamal said as Marlene was raising funds for a cause close to her heart, she was happy to help.
“My family has been affected by cancer so I felt it was important to do my bit to help CANSA. I always said when I had a space of my own I would like to do things to help charity, and now I have this lovely space and we can definitely utilise it. People have told me how beautiful the art on our walls is, and we want them to know it is for sale, for a good cause,” she said.
Marlene has decided to hold a tea and American art auction in June to sell art. There will be guest speakers such as Kerry Dell from Earthbeat, who will speak to women about a healthy, holistic way of living, and a survivor will also be invited to share their story. Kirti will also invite a law lecturer who will speak on empowering women through knowledge of the law.
