Criminals hit the Stellawood Cemetery over the weekend stealing a coffin lowering device from a grave.

Cemetery robbed

Criminals hit a new low in Umbilo this weekend robbing the Stellawood Cemetery on Saturday morning.

According to Lieutenant Pumzile Makaula, communications officer at Umbilo SAPS, a security guard, who was on duty at the cemetery alleges he was alone guarding a coffin lowering machine when two unknown men approached him. “The suspects allegedly told the guard they were looking for a group of family members attending a funeral, then they threatened him saying that if he did anything stupid, he would get hurt before they allegedly threw the carpet used at the graveside over him, took the lowering machine and fled,” she said. Makaula said a case of common robbery was being investigated.

Businesses must be extra vigilant

Umbilo police urged residents and the business community to be extra vigilant after recent incidents of theft over the past week.

“The Post Office on South Coast Road was hit by thieves over the weekend and two forklifts, a steel body cover and two drain covers were stolen. Another weekend robbery saw three high end cellphones, a Microsoft Lumia 535, Microsoft 640 Lumia and Samsung Galaxy stolen from a cellphone store at Davenport Centre, between 8am and 12.30pm. In the latest incident on Monday night, 15 computers were stolen from an Engineering Department at UKZN's Howard Campus,” Lieutenant Makaula said.

She said while Umbilo police were there for the community to fight crime, business and communities have to assist in the fight against crime and “beef up security and be extra vigilant.”

Drug dealer at Dalton hostel arrested

Umbilo police arrested a man for dealing in heroin on Sunday, 12 June at the Dalton Hostel.

Lieutenant Pumzile Makaula said, police officers allegedly received information of someone dealing in heroin at the hostel while out patrolling. “The officers proceeded to the hostel and knocked the door open, introduced themselves and searched the place. A man, admitted he was dealing in heroin to support his family. He was arrested and heroin and money was recovered,” she said.
