BEREA police encouraged the community and visitors to the area to be extra vigilant when they go to the Vodacom Durban July race day at Greyville Racecourse this Saturday, 2 July.

Lieutenant PN Naidoo, appealed to the community to be aware of their vehicles, property and their safety as there will be a large volume of people and vehicles in the area. “There will also be criminals lurking in the area hoping to get lucky,” he warned.

Naidoo warned motorists that a zero tolerance approach would be taken on anyone driving drunk. “If partaking in alcohol please use a taxi service or get a family member to drop and fetch you, do not put innocent lives at risk by driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, you will be arrested. Always safeguard your personal belongings such as handbags, cellphones, wallets and tablets, do not leave these unattended,” he added.

Naidoo advised race goers to report all suspicious persons or vehicles to the police on duty.

“A lot of people will be indulging in alcohol so try to be accompanied by a sober person who can take care of you and your property and can take you home safely. The Vodacom Durban July is an international event and its one of the most glamorous events in South Africa so let’s enjoy this event with our tourists,” he added.
