Security officer lucky to escape injury in shooting

A security officer took cover when housebreakers opened fire on him in a Morningside robbery.

A BLUE Security armed response officer was lucky to escape a shootout with housebreakers in Morningside uninjured at the weekend.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the officer had responded to a housebreaking in progress in Hollander Crescent at around 3pm on Saturday.

“When he arrived at the house he noticed a blue BMW with no registration plates parked in the driveway. A suspect in the vehicle pointed a firearm at our officer and fired a shot which hit the windscreen of the patrol vehicle,” he said.

Jackson said fortunately the officer was not injured. He managed to take cover and fired shots at the suspect who then fled the scene. He said the housebreakers had derailed the driveway gate and forced open the front door to gain entry. A television was reported stolen. Berea SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Jackson added that in a separate incident an armed robber held up a resident in Voysey Road in Morningside at around 5.50am on Saturday. “The resident had left a lounge door open while she was busy packing bags into her car. A suspect walked into her home and held her up with a kitchen knife. He fled with her handbag, laptop and cellphone,” he said.
