MAYVILLE SAPS conducted a “smash and grab” crime awareness campaign, distributing pamphlets at the robot intersection of the N3 and Jan Smuts Highway, on Friday, 1 July.
Warrant Officer Patrick Zithulele Ngwane, communications officer at Mayville SAPS said the campaign was well received by motorists as well as the community.
“Recently a 73-year-old woman who was driving alone became a victim of a smash and grab crime at the robot intersection of Tollgate bridge. So once again we are appealing to our community to be vigilant when approaching any intersection. Motorists are urged not to keep items in plain sight as this tendency entices criminal activity. Usually criminals smash the driver’s or passenger’s window and grab any valuable items lying on the seat such as purses, bags, cell phones, laptops etc,” he explained.
“We assure the community that we are monitoring all hot spots intersections such as Tollgate Bridge, Jan Smuts Highway/ Bellair Road and the N3/ Jan Smuts Highway robot intersections,” he said.
