New 2018 headmaster announced

The appointment of a new headmaster of Clifton School has been announced, with effect from 1 January 2018.

CLIFTON School’s executive headmaster, Brian Mitchell, will be retiring on 31 December 2017, after 15 loyal, successful and productive years of service at the school.

Clifton’s Board of Directors has announced the appointment of David Knowles as headmaster with effect from 1 January 2018. Knowles has 29 years experience in boys’ education and is no stranger to KwaZulu-Natal, having been a housemaster at Kearsney College, before taking up the post of deputy headmaster at St Stithians Boys’ College, a position he held for six years. In 2007, Knowles was appointed headmaster of St Stithians Boys’ College, a position he has held with distinction for 11 years.

Knowles has an honours degree in history from Rhodes University and is an English and History teacher. He is passionate about sport and is also extensively involved in independent education, having served on the National Councils of both the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA), the South African Heads of Independent Schools Association (SAHISA), and as a Trustee of the International Boys’ School Coalition (IBSC), where he is the current Vice President for Africa.

Clifton looks forward to welcoming Knowles and his wife, Susannah, to Durban at the end of the year.
