Free eye cataract surgery benefits poor
Two hundred patients have received the treatment since last month.
AS the last remaining patients prepare to have their eye cataracts removed, the MEC of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dlomo is expected to honour the end of the camp on 9 March, when an estimated 120 patients will be treated.
The International Islamic Relief Organisation of Saudi Arabia Southern Africa (IIROSA) formed a partnership with McCord Provincial Hospital for free eye cataract surgery for 350 patients from last month and to date, almost 200 patients have received treatment.
The project was officially launched last year by the MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Sihle Zikalala at the IIROSA eye clinic in Ezimbokedweni. The state of the art facility has the latest equipment and expertise essential in carrying out life enhancing cataract procedures free of charge to impoverished communities. At the opening, Regional Director of the organisation Sheikh Walid El Saadi announced that IIROSA was holding the first camp for eye cataract surgery in South Africa for 600 patients.
