News from Berea SAPS

Berea SAPS will be holding a pamphlet distribution campaign to keep the public informed on how to avoid becoming victims of crime.

Campaign highlights crime

BEREA SAPS will be holding a pamphlet distribution campaign to highlight crime prevention on Saturday, 25 February, starting at 8.45am.

According to Capt PN Naidoo, communications officer, the area is experiencing crimes such as theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles and hijackings and from the social crime point of view, the station wants to make the public aware on what to do to prevent them becoming victims of crime.

“The aim is to distribute these pamphlets outside the three major shopping centres in the Berea patrol area, Musgrave Centre, The Atrium and Windermere Centres,” he said.

Distribution will start outside the Musgrave Centre main entrance.

Don’t sit in your car at night

CAPTAIN Naidoo said it had come to the police’s attention that people are still sitting in their vehicles at late hours of the night, thus making themselves vulnerable to carjackings.

“People come to visit people in our area but sit in their vehicle with that person instead of going into the flat or to a restaurant to chat. They also park in dark, shaded areas where the vehicle is isolated. We patrol the area and when we see something like this we inform the person in the vehicle that it is not safe to stay in their parked vehicle,” said Naidoo.

Awareness

PEOPLE are still leaving valuables visible in their vehicles which entices criminals to break in and sometimes even steal the vehicle.

“Vehicles are being recovered, mainly the ones fitted with a tracking device, and valuables are also recovered in the vehicle.

The police appreciate any assistance from the public and encourage them, if possible, to fit a tracking device to their vehicle,” said Capt Naidoo.

Good arrests

SAPS Berea is sending out a warning to the public that if they break the law they will be arrested.

Captain Naidoo said one person driving under the influence of alcohol and another person found in possession of dagga were arrested at the weekend.
