Umbilo armed robbers sent to jail
Two men were convicted of crimes and sentenced in Durban courts on 16 February.
JUSTICE was served after two men were recently sentenced to jail for committing armed robberies in Umbilo.
Twenty-three-year-old Siphelele Gcabashe was sentenced on 16 February to 10 years imprisonment, five suspended, for accosting a couple at the intersection of Che Guevara Road and St Andrew’s Street on 21 January.
“A man and his wife were stopped at the traffic lights at the intersection when two men approached them. One of the men stabbed the wife and grabbed her chain from around her neck. The driver then drew a gun and shot one of the men,” said Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS.
She said the man was taken to King Edward Hospital to be treated and on discharge was arrested and charged.
On 16 February, 39-year-old Dayle Marais was sentenced to six years imprisonment for robbery with a knife. Makaula said a woman was walking in Prains Road when she was approached by Marais who was armed with a knife.
“He demanded her bag and when she refused, he overpowered her and took her bag including cash and personal items. She sustained injuries and was taken to St Augustine’s Hospital where she was treated,” she said.
Marais was later apprehended and detained at Umbilo SAPS. He was sentenced at Durban Regional Court on 16 February.
