Councillor embarks on illegal sign blitz
Martin Meyer said the issue of illegal signs going up in the ward is getting particularly bad and makes the area look 'tacky'.
THE proliferation of illegal advertising signs across ward 27 prompted councillor Martin Meyer to remove the signs which were being fixed on trees, sign posts and even traffic lights, and which he said, made the area look “tacky”.
Not only does Meyer remove the signs, but he also contacts the number on the sign to inform them that the sign is illegal and requests they refrain from putting more signs up. He also reports them to the municipality’s Illegal Signage Department so repeat offenders can be issued with a fine.

“It is very difficult with signs which advertise cellphone contact numbers as the person can deny it was them that erected the sign, but we are trying to do something,” he said.
Meyer said if residents saw an illegal signs they could remove them and put them in their recycling bin.
“Legal signs are the bigger ones and have an eThekwini sticker on them.”
“I urge residents not to support businesses advertised on illegal signs. I understand advertising is expensive for small businesses but there are alternatives like electronic media. People don’t have to ruin the image of the community in the process,” he said.
