Popular restaurant bids farewell to Durban beachfront
Surf Riders Cafe has until September 30 to vacate the municipal premises on South Beach after its lease was terminated.
IT is the end of a chapter for Surf Riders Café as the outlet closes its South Beach branch at the end of the month.
Through its social media page, Surf Riders Café showed a copy of eThekwini Municipality’s communication, indicating the termination of its lease.
“We have had to close our Surf Riders South Beach restaurant. Not all is lost; we are still trading well in both our Cabana Beach resort restaurant and our Umhlanga Boulevard store. Looking forward to seeing you all there, enjoying our hospitality and great food,” said the social media post.
The café conveyed “a huge thank you to all our amazing customers who have supported us over the years, and many more to come”.
“Very sad news, Durban’s loss for sure. I don’t know how I’m going to tell my daughter who absolutely loves Surf Riders South Beach, and we have had many a birthday party there and many breakfasts. The staff is always so friendly. Lifetime family memories. We will continue to support wherever we can,” one commenter shared.

A handful of the comments highlighted the state of deterioration on the beachfront. “Yet another empty property,” they said.
In the notice to vacate the municipal property, signed by the Director of Property Valuation and Management, it is stated that the lease contract between the two parties expired on March 31, 2019. After which, a month-to-month arrangement was in place.
Surf Riders Café has, according to the notice, until September 30 to vacate the premises.
