WHILE the youth struggles to find jobs because of a high premium on work experience, those who battle the most are matriculants.
According to statistics, 46% of the youth is unemployed which is double that of adults. With close to 800,000 young people who wrote their matric exams last year, the question is what will happen to those who cannot further their studies.
Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator (Harambee), a not-for-profit social enterprise, works to tackle youth unemployment and has successfully helped more than 45,000 first-time work-seekers, who would otherwise have been locked out of the formal economy, find employment.
Since inception in 2011, Harambee has established a proven track record of connecting more than 400 employers looking for entry-level talent to young, high-potential matriculants. Harambee has a screening and assessment methodology that scientifically matches candidates to suitable work opportunities in companies across the retail, hospitality, financial services, insurance, business process outsourcing, technical and industrial sectors.

According to Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator’s Nsikelelo Gcwabaza, the number one tip for finding a job is to network and a concise, professional CV is an absolute must when looking for a job.
“Make sure you have an email address so that you can send your CV out electronically. Apply for jobs that are close to where you live – preferably no more than one taxi ride away. Practice answering interview questions with a friend and use only one cell phone number when looking for a job – and then keep your phone on and fully charged and answer calls in a professional manner,” said Gcwabaza.
“These young people have the potential to succeed but lack the networks to find work. Harambee assesses their skills and strengths and matches them to an opportunity where they are most likely to succeed. It’s really easy for candidates to register.
