25 years pro-poor development celebrated

PROJECT Preparation Trust (PPT) celebrated 25 years of pro-poor development at a function held in Durban recently.

PPT is a non-profit orgnisation, established in 1993 prior to the first democratic elections in South Africa to support change and transformation. Its main focus is on helping communities, vulnerable groups and government prepare appropriate and viable developmental projects. These projects include the upgrading of informal settlements, special needs housing, early childhood development and municipal infrastructure.

To date, PPT-prepared projects have resulted in R1.89 billion in capital funding being provided to 181 projects benefiting over 211 000 disadvantaged households. PPT partners with communities, various spheres of government, donor funders and other civil society organisations. The organisation has a particular focus on the poorest of the poor, and those in special need such as people residing in highly marginalised rural communities or urban informal settlements or vulnerable children.

The organisation also assists government in developing policies and programmes which cater more effectively to the poor and which are more inclusive. PPT has played a leading role in several national and provincial policies, including those relating to the upgrading of informal settlements, human settlement development and special needs housing.
