Labour union supports African Fashion Exchange
"We cannot compromise on the issues of Proudly South Africa."
LABOUR Union Cosatu’s provincial chair, Edwin Mkhize, was present at the opening launch of African Fashion Exchange (AFX). Speaking on the sidelines, Mkhize said the union viewed such events as important in that they were trying to resuscitate the clothing industry in the country which almost collapsed as a result of an influx of imported goods.
“We believe that events of this nature contribute immensely in labour creation and also in economic development. We are of the view that economic development must also benefit the workers, Behind the clothes that we are wearing, there is a worker that is producing these clothes, that worker must begin to enjoy the fruits of his labour,” he said.
Mkhize also took the opportunity to urge local retailers and fashion factories to take part in such initiatives. “We cannot compromise on the issues of Proudly South Africa, we understand the challenges many of our people face, most of them buy these imported goods mainly because they are cheap and that may be because in those countries they might have advanced ways. We urge retailers in our country and fashion factories to be part of such initiatives. They must also make sure that they avail opportunities to our people in the townships. Our products must also be affordable which will ensure that we don’t depend on imported goods,” said Mkhize.
