Young designer skirts around time challenge
Ntshangase had entered a competition to make a skirt for radio personality Vanessa Marawa.
SEVERAL up-and-coming designers were put under pressure to show what they’re made of in a competition to make a skirt for radio personality, Vanessa Marawa in just one hour during one of the many activities at the Africa Fashion Exchange held at the ICC last week.
Proud winner of the challenge was Makhosazane Ntshangase’s design which Marawa loved. As part of her prize, Ntshangase walked away with a brand new sewing machine from one of the exhibitors. Alyssa Bahadur who made the skirt that the KZN Fashion Council board liked, also won a sewing machine.

The Berea Mail, caught up with Ntshangase who is a first year student at Lindiwe Kuzwayo Academy of Fashion Design. She was thrilled with her success and said the machine was going to help in her exams as students are expected to create a wedding dress.
“I am so happy I cannot even explain how I am feeling right now. I finished the task in 30 minutes. I didn’t plan for this as I only heard about the event on Friday, the day before the competition, on social media. I was just happy that I was going to attend the event and did not expect to get this opportunity to showcase my skill. It normally takes one day for me to make a dress but today everything went so well. I love designing more avant-garde items but because of reality, I focus more on ready to wear because most people prefer that,” she said.
