Watch investigates UIP potential for Glenwood

GCW held a community meeting in Bedford Gardens on Saturday.

THE introduction of a potential Urban Iprovement Precinct for Glenwood was raised at a public meeting of the Glenwood Community Watch (GCW) at Bedford Gardens on Saturday afternoon, 13 October.

At the meeting, chairman Guy Perrins noted that resident, Graham Muller and a few other interested parties had met with him earlier in the week to discuss the matter.

At the public meeting, Muller was asked to give an overview on the potential of a UIP being put in place in the sector. After his verbal presentation a majority vote indicated the interest of establishing a UIP to address security issues in the area.

“Graham volunteered to draw up a business plan which will be circulated to residents in our footprint. Anybody who is interested in assisting Graham can contact him via the GCW,” said Perrins.

Perrins also raised the matter of an increase in petty crime in the area and claimed that the area was experiencing on average three incidents per day.

“This is a large spike in crime in our footprint. The prime driver is as a result of Metro Police moving the whoonga and other crime elements out of Durban central into neighbouring areas.”

“This leaves SAPS,other security providers and residents with the problem. As a community we need to be more vigilant,” he said, urging residents to report all incidents to the Watch after notifying their respective security company and 10111.

He also encouraged those in attendance to join the Community Watch patrols.

“Patrols are not onerous and we would welcome anybody, even if only one patrol per month. Patrols are normally only one to two hours at most,” he said.

According to Perrins the GCW has been tight on funding and has held back on major operational expenses for the last two years.

Major annual expenses are radio license payments and a cellphone. He said current expenses included the radio repeater and servicing of radios, new car decals, flyers and shirts. Any private or company donations are welcome.
