Police probe stripped car parts export to Mauritius

Police are investigating why the vehicles were stripped and not reported stolen while under bank finance.

BORDER Policings Trans International Crime Investigation Unit made a massive breakthrough at Durban Harbour in a joint operation last week when they discovered a container full of stripped car parts intended for export from South Africa to Mauritius.

According to police, the container was fronted as second-hand parts for export but on unpacking the container police found three of the engines and car panels for Audi and Ford Rangers were linked to two hijacked vehicles. The container also contained a variety of luxury car panels and engines of Mercedes, Audi, BMWs, Ford Rangers and Hyundai Tuscons which are currently licensed, insured and bank financed. The estimated value of the cars is R10-million. Police are investigating why the vehicles were stripped and not reported stolen while under bank finance.

In another breakthrough last week, police followed up on information they had received about a drug laboratory operating from a flat in Umhlanga Rocks.  Police appraoched a 53-year-old-man and arrested him. He was taken to the premises in question which were then searched by police who found mandrax and heroin with a street value of R1.5m. The premises is believed to have been used for packaging and storage of drugs.

The suspent was charged for possession and dealing in drugs and is to appear in court on Monday, 31 December.
