ETHEKWINI Municipality has established a war room to tackle the city’s water crisis.
This was revealed at a meeting of the Executive Council Committee on Tuesday. Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the city had noticed a increased volume of complaints regarding water shortages in the region which had led to service delivery protests.
“Apart from the fact that there are areas within the city that constantly experience intermittent water supply due to aging infrastructure and the increase in population, particularly in rural areas, the situation has been worsened by load shedding and cable theft,” he said

Kaunda said the demand for water far outstrips the city’s supply and new solutions would have to be found. Thabani Mthethwa, DA exco member, welcomed the announcement of a war room council and asked if councillors would form part of it.
Kaunda said the war room council would be headed by City Manager Sipho Nzuza and water department offiicals but would not include ward councillors. He said the council is expected to make monthly reports to Exco regarding its progress. Mdu Nkosi, IFP exco members suggested the city look at controlling the number of illegal immigrants who enter the city. Nkosi said illegal immigrants were not counted in the population census which skewered the number of people the city needed to provide basis services for.
