Unattended sewage leak raises a stink
The city said it was attending to this matter which was compounded by foreign objects entering the system.

RESIDENTS on Crescent Road, Durban are complaining about a foul stench emanating from a sewage leak that’s been left unattended for several weeks.
John Biggs, who runs a freight company on the road, said the leak has been flowing non-stop for over six weeks.
“It flows across the pavements and then settles at the bottom where it leaves a very foul smell, stinking up the whole area,” he said.

Biggs said he had been in constant contact with the eThekwini Municipality and even the department of Health to come and solve the issue.

“The municipality has been out (here) many times and disappeared stating they need to get more equipment and don’t come back,” he said.
“The situation is deteriorating everyday with faster flow of this smelly water.”
Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson said they are aware of the leak.
“The city is attending to this matter that is compounded by foreign objects entering the system. The City apologises for the inconvenience caused.”

According to an auditor-general report from 2018, the city loses about 105.22 million kilolitres of water every year due to ageing infrastructure.
