Suspected drug dealer nabbed in Overport
A 25-year-old man was arrested in a targeted drug operation, with police seizing cocaine and suspected heroin worth an estimated R36 000.
A 25-year-old man was arrested on Friday at the corner of Sparks Road and Browns Avenue in a targeted operation by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit.
During the operation, police recovered approximately 400 pieces of rock cocaine and 400 red and white capsules suspected to be heroin, with an estimated street value of R36 000.
“Members acted on information gathered during ongoing investigations and conducted an operation in the Overport area. The suspect was detained at Sydenham SAPS and is expected to face charges relating to the possession and/or dealing in drugs. He will appear in court in due course,” said SAPS eThekwini District spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes.
Rhynes added that during the same operation in Phoenix, police responded to concerns raised by community members regarding suspected drug-related activities at the High Chaparral Flats.
“A sting operation was conducted at the premises, resulting in the recovery of a quantity of suspected drugs and substances that had been abandoned. Police recovered 178 bottles of various cough syrups, 370 ziplock packets containing suspected dagga, and approximately 2.5kg of loose high-grade dagga. The recovered items have an estimated value of approximately R46 000,” Rhynes said.
Acting eThekwini District Commissioner Brigadier Sakhengenkosi Zuma welcomed the successes.
“Drug dealing and the abuse of illegal substances have a devastating impact on communities and often contribute to other forms of crime.

“These operations demonstrate the importance of police and community co-operation. We encourage members of the public to continue providing SAPS with information regarding suspected criminal activities,” said Zuma.
The total value of the drugs from both operations is estimated at R82 000. No arrests have been made in connection with the Phoenix recovery at this stage.
The public are urged to report suspected criminal activities to their nearest police station or provide information anonymously to the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
